Skin is the human body's largest organ, spanning approximately 21-square feet for the average adult. When summer hits, it's essential to take special care of your skin. Go ahead and enjoy the warm temperatures and sunny days, but don't forget your skin care. Summer skin care is important for your health as well as for how you feel and look. Check out these essential summer skin care tips from our beauty experts.
Increase Your Water Intake
One of the best ways to take care of your skin in the summer is through hydration. Everyone has heard the advice, drink at least eight, eight-ounce glasses of water (about 1.9 liters) daily for proper hydration. However, the Mayo Clinic reports that recommendation for daily water intake from the Institute of Medicine is 13 cups or three liters for men and nine cups or 2.2 liters for women.
Keeping up your water intake helps keep skin soft and supple. If active when outside in the summer sun and heat, you'll need to up your water intake to keep dehydration at bay. Dehydration not only dries out your skin, but it can cause headaches, nausea, and dizziness. Remember drinks with caffeine or alcohol also can contribute to dehydration. Plain water or water infused with fruit, cucumbers, or fresh mint offers the best hydration.
Choose a Hydration Serum
In addition to increasing your water intake this summer, consider a hyaluronic serum to treat your skin with incredible moisture even during the hottest, harshest days. The hyaluronic serum from Uptown Cosmeceutical has 50 times the water binding capacity of a HMWHA or high molecular weight hyaluronic acid plus five times more moisturization than a standard hyaluronic acid moisturizer. Adding this type of serum to your summer skin care routine helps reduce dryness while brightening your complexion.
Don't Skip the SPF
The American Academy of Dermatology ( AAD) recommends wearing a broad-spectrum sunscreen (protection against both UVA and UVB rays) with at least a 30 SPF or sun protection factor. It should also be water-resistant, especially if you plan to be in the water or active enough to sweat. Apply your sunscreen under your makeup daily to help protect against the sun's rays even if you're just going from the car to the office or to lunch with friends. Spending the day at the beach or pool? Be sure to reapply frequently. A tan looks amazing, but without the proper skin care, you increase your risk for skin damage later.
Pamper Over-Exposed Skin
It happens. Sometimes we forget to apply or reapply the sunscreen and our skin pays the price. Pamper over-exposed skin with soothing botanical gels and a DIY masque made from pantry items. An oatmeal mask is ideal for soothing sun-irritated skin naturally. Simply combine:
- 1/2 cup oats
- 1 tablespoon plain yogurt
- 1 tablespoon honey
- 1/3 cup warm water
Apply the masque and allow it to soothe for about 15 minutes. Rinse with cold water.
Try a vitamin-enriched serum to help fight premature aging and any UV damage from time spent in the sun, especially when you've forgotten to apply that sunscreen. A Vitamin C serum can reduce dark spots, lines, and discoloration caused by UV damage.
